Certificate in Funeral Service

Course Structure & Delivery

The Certificate in Funeral Service is delivered through a seven-module syllabus designed to provide a strong foundation in key areas of the funeral profession. Taught over a six-month period, the course combines in-person and online classes, led by two level 5 Qualified Tutors. This flexible, blended learning approach allows students to engage with the material in a way that suits their individual needs.

This structured learning experience is delivered in person over three weekends, supported by additional ZOOM sessions, and culminates in a final examination in February 2026.

  2. The Role of the Funeral Director

  3. Health & Safety in the Funeral Profession

  4. Core Skills

  5. Administration

  6. Working with other Allied Organisations

  7. Bereavement & Client Care
     

This structured yet adaptable course format ensures a comprehensive introduction to funeral service, combining theoretical understanding with practical skills and real-world relevance.

Assessment & Accreditation

Assessment throughout the course includes a blend of tutor-marked proof of learning reports, individual projects, and presentations. Learners are expected to dedicate approximately 60 hours of private study using the syllabus and other research tools in preparation for the final examination.

As part of the course, students must also complete one 1,500-word summative report based on a visit to a Funeral Home. This report will be submitted to Greenwich University as part of the course accreditation process.

 

Final Examination:
📝 A 1.5-hour written paper made up of short essay-style questions.
✅ Pass mark: 60%
📚 Exam papers are marked by accredited members of the BIFD examinations board and submitted to Greenwich University for final accreditation.

Grading Criteria:

  • Distinction: 80% and above

  • Merit: 70% – 79%

  • Pass: 60% – 69%

  • Referral: Below 60%
     

Qualification:
Candidates who successfully complete all seven theory modules, all tutor-marked assessments, the summative Funeral Home report, and the final written examination will be awarded a Certificate in Funeral Service.

This qualification forms the foundation for further study and offers a clear progression route to the Level 4 Diploma in Funeral Service.
